PROJECT SUMMARY - Bag (Popcorn)

ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE AND SUMMARY

Bags, bags, bags! They are everywhere even if you don’t realize it at first. Paper bags. Plastic bags. Material bags. They all have their uses, pros and cons.

For the project we used a coffee sized bag with the bendable closure, called a Tin Tie. The bottom of the bag is called a Flat Bottom Design. This flat bottom allows the bag to sit upright on shelves. Some bags are called Pinched Bottom and will not sit upright. But for our product being a food type a flat bottom will be a presentable product design.

What's the End Product Type?

The type of product was predetermined to be a food product - Popcorn. Being the pre-popped and ready to eat style.  You decide the target audiences. Make them different!

Sorry!

Under Construction.

HAND COMP

I take great pride in the hand work that I do for every project, and it is of course the most time-consuming part of the assignment, I tend to take my time and lay things out as best I can in order to work out the ideas that I have. Going the extra line length in the pencil playground. Which always make the computer work quick and efficient. Saving time in the long run, or so I would hope.

This assignment was not without some challenges, having to think about the way it would appear in more of the 3D or practical application and placement of the product. Which was also the case for the last assignment in this course, but the die became more intricate and the design than followed. Seeing my sketches and hand work in the dummy form was interesting and helped to better understand issues that may arise… and several times did. I was essential, especially in this part of the process. Just tightening things up that much further, and giving better understanding to how the product presentation would be received by the audience and consumer.

I struggled with some of the design work in the hand stage this go, but all in all it worked out great in the end and what I ended up moving forward with was very successful.

COMPUTER COMP

This was not without its challenges, transferring from my hand work was simple to say the least because of my hand comp quality and work, but the struggle came into play with the introduction of color to the piece. In many ways the black and white quality was strong and stood out, but we were challenged not to use black and work with just the 3 spot colors.

No small task. While the assignment is now completed, I know that I will have to rework the colors, when it prints it comes out much darker because of the overprints that are there, but on screen… it looks terrible. And the color selection of the print output isn’t even that strong either. With more time I can sharpen this work further, but for now it is where it is. There was just a loss of time and lack of resources to make it a strong final product.

This is definitely something that I will be returning to shortly. It just doesn’t read as being a strong final product. Which it just needs more time and tender artsy love.

Design Process Step Summary

Creative gears were tuning the moment the instruction was given to be geared toward popcorn. And I really wanted my bag to have a certain look. I loved the Noir style and the monster movie style. There were several others, but in this stage, those were my strongest.

Its always hard to represent the photo assets in research that we choose or find for inspiration. There are often hundreds. For me I have physical and photo assets that I used to get an idea moving.

Design Process Step Summary

Ahhh... the doodle stage, I still lake to call them the crap sketch stage or pencil playground.

I use these terms often, because they are just that, they aren’t always keeper or things that would really impress others, sometimes done on some scrap piece of paper, others times doodled on a napkin and tossed. Its just the way we get the creative works greased and primed for the really work.  You’re really are just playing with the ideas and thoughts at this point. Nothing more and nothing less.

Design Process Step Summary

I wanted to go with the noir style and look, but when I got to this stage I was beginning to wonder if the sketch representation or direction was really what I was hoping for and if it was a project that could be achieved realistically.

I started to lean towards the monster pop. I knew my illustrative nature and intent for this was solid and if I took this forward I could achieve it quickly and easily.

I was far less enthused and decided to axe the dark carnival idea, my creative heart and mind just wasn’t in it and felt that I wasn’t what I wanted for this project.

Design Process Step Summary

Ohh my god they are just so cute, if you could see these in person… they are literally built to what the end product would be but were able to fit into the palm of my hand. Too cute and let me see what was to expect going forward to the other dummies.

Design Process Step Summary

This was exactly as I thought it would be the ideas really sharpened and came to life. there was no question… the noir idea could be cool on the computer and fun to play with more, but it just looked busy and poorly laid out on paper, the stronger of the two was the Monster Pop for sure.

I just loved my cute characters and the way it was evolving at this point.

Design Process Step Summary

Some issues with the transfer to the dummy. You can see that of the two-monster pop wins this race. And what there was in the way of problems they could easily be reworked from here. Like the frame around the count going over to the castle. I just needed to be a single panel instead of traveling to the back. This was just one thing to adjust but the corrections needed became easier to see. Dummies are huge in the way of tightening up work and making ease of a design.

Design Process Step Summary

This is usually a pretty seamless but also the longest part of my assignments. I have always been more meticulous in my layouts and when I get to this stage, it is the solid planning and set up for making computer work easier. So when I am at this point things are put to paper as exact to the intent as possible.

This is a challenge sometimes but it is truly one of the most fun aspects to the work. I have always been a physical media guy and so before the computer come into play, this is where my first creative love is at.

Design Process Step Summary

I love seeing the work come to life, the flat spread is cool and it shows what is going on with the precision that I work in, but you don’t really see it until it gets to this point. It just came together so well. I am very pleased with this work this far into it. Hand work like this just has a certain quality to it and it really plays into the success of the assignment I feel.

Design Process Step Summary

Look how good it transferred, there is always some variation in the work that is hard to duplicate, but when you measure and lay things out well pre compute, it really saves time and makes for easy work. Which you can always see in the initial computer work because of how close it is in my hand work. If nothing else this is where I feel fellow peers may struggle some, because they forget the physical media or even feel that it is easier to move to computer quicker. This is partially true, but on computer you have so many options you can easily get lot in them. Your intention is too fluid and in hand work there is more solid and sure intent.

There really was only minor adjustments that were needed here and there.

Design Process Step Summary

Again you don’t realize how much your work can come to life until you see it at this stage of the process. I just makes you feel good going from the simple and sketch stage all the way through to the finished work.  which this isn’t quite the finished stage, but its getting closer and closer...

Design Process Step Summary

I do not love the color that I have been working on there, there is only so much more I can say than that. I wanted to see it really pop with monster colors, but with my printer and the presentation paper I have I could only get so far in this one. This is where I would need more time to get it closer to a finished product with better selection. But alas, there was no more time left and I had to just call it finished. Though I have to say the design is good. With some minor tweaks.

Like the over run of the mountains with the castle, it needs to all shiff to the right of it more then the moon can come over some, and there are some type face issues here and there. Overall though it  really comes down to color.

CoxC_Bag_Final Comp.jpg

Design Process Step Summary

This looks even worse on the computer, it shows so washed out and the colors print much darker, it just doesn’t read with quality, there is some shame in this stage of the process, but I ran out of time. It works for what it is… but I will not be letting this stay as is or be known as a finished work. Because in my mind it is not!

It is part of the process and path to a finished work so it is now here, But it is not to say and it is only a failure to learn from and grow with.

Design Process Step Summary

Ah and here we are at the final stage. It looks so so... to not great. the design is good, layout is good, content is good.

Its just the damn colors that hold it back from being truly successful.... in other words please stand by...

And here we are with the temporary state of sort of finished but really not. It is better printed and viewed off the computer, But still isn't working. lets just say this is a to be continued hook, as you would see in an old movie which has a planned sequel
