ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE AND SUMMARY

For the news paper ad series we were given four animals to choose from to represent for a mock pet store ad. we had to have a creative and esthetically pleasing layout that would not only work for one animal but all three. the ads all had their own theme or title, but all ads needed to look along the same lines.

We were given the expectation to have all three within the same size, appearance, and having the required information that was needed to represent each animal category. while completing this expectation, it introduced us to several concepts of printing and content management and layout design, it also introduced us to the concept of being critiqued. The following is the outcome of these expectations.

HAND COMP

I wanted to create an ad with illustration that was similar to being something that one might have seen in an older / vintage advertisement. So, I started with the boarder to determine the space needed for the artwork.

From there I began to play with the animals we were needing to represent. When I first sketched them out, I felt that there was a degree of realism that I wanted to capture but also cartoon-ize and humanize them. Once I did this I realized that I needed to scale back the realism and find a middle ground between the real and cartoon. Once I did this, I achieved the look I desired.

I believe my hand comp was accomplished well. I only struggle was with the rabbit and getting the images scanned into the computer with precision. If we would have just done sketch or with various mediums, I would have been able to accomplish this further. Because the computer would be my biggest draw back.

COMPUTER COMP

I feel that this assignment was the most successful and shows more of my talent. I was able to really explore and enjoy the project more than any other. I enjoy layout and illustration. I might not know the direction my degree or where art is taking me. Illustration has always been enjoyable for me.

My only issue what with this was the conversion to the computer, this is my biggest area that is in need of development at this moment in time. Which is where my educations focus has been. Taking my art from the physical mediums to the digital. I scanned the images; however, they were not sharp enough, and having grey patches. I was lucky enough to have some experience this semester with photo shop to clear up the images. But even then, I decided to use InDesign to create a vectored image. There may have been ways that could have made this easier. I just haven’t learned them yet. Despite this learning curve, I felt this assignment has been my best thus far. Most enjoyable, and most successful.
