ART 2230 Advanced Type & Layout - Kerry Gonzales

ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE AND SUMMARY
The Type Figure project helps to stretch the abilities of how a Designer uses typography. As with any project, this will begin with Research. Looking for similar type treatments. Finding and taking note to whether the type has been manipulated. Most times it will be stretched and distorted to "fit" the shapes needed. That part is easy!

What will be required, will be more of a challenge; as we will be required to ensure that no distortion of type occurs whatsoever!
The objective of course is to give designers and students practice and experience with creative type! Experimenting with different type styles, sizes, and placements, requiring designers to make final decisions on what type of application will be used for the final project output. Considering texture, shape, flow, and/or value. Type can be used for all of these.

A crucial decision in the beginning phase is to choose – or photograph your own – images that will show the most shape information. Think movement, creative interest, and communicating figure form.

HAND COMP

Overall Assignment Summary of my Hand / Physical Process in making for the successful outcome of the project. there was much to take away from this, and while there may have seemed to be quite a bit done in the pre design and hand stages, I know that this leg work was key to the success of the project. doing the leg work and taking the time to work through things on paper, ended up making a lot of the work on the computer easier.

I have heard it said by many designers that it is easier for them to go straight to the computer once they have the idea, and while this may be true in some cases. I have honestly found that my most successful projects first come to life in the physical media / modes.

So all I can say is that this is and always will be a huge portion to my design process. This may be because I have started in the physical media / modes and have the foundations in this. And while i have been focusing on gaining knowledge is digital art styles and tools, i know my roots will always be vital to my success.

The only real adversity that i had felt with this, even in the Hand / Physical stages, was the confidence in expressing or playing with the type. We are taught to write on a straight line and be consistent in size and direction, and in this I feel we boke the rules. Which is art in so may ways.
COMPUTER COMP
Overall Assignment Summary Section of Computer Process at work in successful development of the project. I know that this was easier than I thought I might be, I figured it would have taken more time than it had. I know it took hours and some dedication but I was far more simple.

This simple notion or feeling that I have now, was certainly attributed to the hand / physical comp work. I really feel that I had an understanding of the direction i was wanting to take this long before i even considered the digital form and development.

Thanks to InDesign the digital tools we have available to us are easy to use. this isn't an adobe software plug, just the honest truth. As I was using the line and individual character method. I noted that in pre digital art, the artist would be doing what I was doing on a much different scale. with more steps and time consumption. Somehow it just hit home with what I was doing and trying to achieve. These tool and techniques similar to all of their precursors. They should be respected and not taken for granite.

TYPE FIGURE PROJECT
PROCESS AND FINAL OUTCOME

Design Process Step Summary
While there was the option to photograph my own full figure pose, I wasn't interested in doing this . So, I decided to find the most expressive posses i could within the confines of creative commons for this project. And where best but the expressive froms that come from the theater and ballet dancers.

COMPLETION TIME SUMMARY - 4.85 hrs ( Time Ran Long Due To Clarification and Research Complications )

For the doodling and sketching portion of the project I started with doing a pre analysis of tracing the images, In order to understand the flow for the figure in relation to the phase choices, Then there was the shapes that made up the figure, understanding these allowed me to better understand what I was hoping to have accomplished in my type figure.

Royal Ballet Dancer

Elegant Ballet Dancer

I started out designing and laying out both figures. however after some time and some consideration to feedback from peers and our esteemed instructor, I made the decision to to go forward with "Elegant Ballet Dancer".

When I first started designing, though I considerable experience with type and layout I was more constrained with my willingness to be playful and free with the type. With some effort and practice, i gradually broke free of this, and allowed my design to loosen up and become more intentionally playful and elegant.

COMPLETION TIME SUMMARY - 7.45 hrs

There were still a few areas that still needed to be tuned up. However, the overall appearance of my design came together quite nicely, With the majority of all of the issue areas worked out. In my physical / hand drafting process, The Computer work to fallow would become easier and tighter in its outcomes. I was quite satisfied with the outcome of my work, While it may have take time, I truly feel that its process paid off.

COMPLETION TIME SUMMARY - 1.38 hrs

The Process of transferring the design was simple. Placing a scan of the tight hand comp into InDesign and then adjusting it down to a 15% transparency so that I could lay my type over the light image and retrace my layout design. Using both individualized characters and type on path, I placed paths and individual characters and scaled / placed where needed.

COMPLETION TIME SUMMARY - 6.95 hrs

This stage of the process was a bit more time consuming than what I would have liked but the drafting and mark up was a great deal of back and forth. With both immense and slight changes being made, which affected the overall look in the end.

The greatest challenge was keeping track of all the different changes that I was needing to make, but also logging all the changes. I had completed roughly 15 or so drafts during this process but only captured a handful.

That being said; working in a non destructive practice would be the greatest take away from this. Remembering to log the different changes that were being made as they were being made. Making sure to safe the drafts for records of changes.

I am honestly quite pleased with my design and layout for this project, it took some doing, but it came out quite nicely. I was honestly quite surprised at the apprehension I had at first, I had almost seemed as though I was nervous or scared in a way. looking back at it now, I honestly don't know why. It may just be an artists thing; we strive to make great and wonderful works, in most cases it comes easily, but it is our uncertainty that holds us back. Yet if we just realize or acknowledge the ability in the chance of making something worth sharing, than we can do just that.
