ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE AND SUMMARY

/kiCH/

noun – German / mass produced art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of cheap quality, tacky look, lowbrow taste.

Kitsch is everywhere. You probably even have several items in your home. There will always be tacky kitsch but there are many items that are actually well designed. This is what the assignment required us to create.  A well-designed clever kitsch display type package or box.

The copy is always important but especially on this type of product. At first glance the design may not look like kitsch at all. Only after reading the copy viewer might discover the humor in the design and this is the goal.

What's the Product?

This is one of the bigger projects for the class. As mentioned above, for this assignment the type of product will be a Kitsch display box. You decide the target audiences.

There will be at least two names on the piece – a product name and a parent company name.

Parent Company name: Funky Kitsch®

HAND COMP

There have been challenges this semester, during this project I was affected by strep, and fell prey to extreme exhaustion and overall blah. But with some time, I was able to bring the project up to speed with where my peers were at and finish a project that I was proud of.

The worst part was during some of my handwork I was running a fever and imagined myself being further than I was, those sketched weren’t the worst but they weren’t the best either. I also had issues with finding them after I showed them in class. So somewhere somehow, I finished this process. But there were definite challenges and aspects that affected my overall quality and design.

I did lean towards one of the other products but this was the simplest to execute and one that could still be fun and creative in the end. It was a fun project for sure, and it all started with the ideas that I had a the delusions of a fever brain. So Much Fun! There were parts of me that wondered if I would in fact pull it off or not. I don't like to fall behind but sometimes things do happen.

COMPUTER COMP

So easy, I loved when I finally got to this stage, what was different though from the other projects was the Die and layout, I had many adjustments that were done and several were done at the computer stages, because I had to create my own, and I figured how I would do it, but I had to really put it to the paper and layout board to construct and problem solve

This was huge, and I had no idea how sore my fingers could get with scoring board or cutting it with the exacto-knives. I really was interesting, because I cut it out, assembled it then adjusted it, and with every time I had to adjust it I adjusted my computer design, I tell you there is no way you could do this without building dummies. There are just things that you don’t see until you do. And as wonderful as computers are, making our lives and processes easier, there is still something about building it by hand. Touching and feeling it, then understanding it. This part of design goes a long way.

I do feel like this assignment overall was successful, There are still areas to improve, especially with the copy and typeface, but overall it really came together and is a project I can be proud of.

Design Process Step Summary

These were fun, I had several ideas when I was coming up with all of these and there were some that were good and that I could run with, others were just ridiculous.

I really was leaning toward the HD Life, Karen Be Gone, and the Voo-Dont.

They were just fun Ideas that were simple, though the Voo-Dont was going to be the most difficult I was sure of. But I lots of fun ideas and inspirations.

So I lost all of my sketches and hand work so this is me recreating it and going through that whole thing again. This is ridiculous, but just another blunder of a issues with regards to this whole semester. I don’t even have words for the frustration I feel right now. But what can you do. Yay redoing work that you have already done, and I must be frank… it is work that has already lead to a successful piece elsewhere.

Design Process Step Summary

And its official, I just am burnt out, I would love to give details on all of this, and show the work that I did, But I’m just having a meltdown, and I hit my max.

So this is what it is. I will probably loose my A and the 4.0 and all the things that matter to me, but I cant go back and recreate this, I’m just spent.

I worked hard on this even after being sick and frantically trying to catch up, but it was almost for naught. I’m just done, I will move forward but not back. I can’t find any of it, I don’t know if I threw it away accidently or left it at work because I was working on it there. But all of it is missing, the hand dummies and all.

Thanks for letting me try. Hand work is out on this one. Just the pre work, and the computer work sadly. I cant find even the work that I showed in class, as little as it was. I’m just disappointed. I thought I had it all and this was going to be easy today.

Design Process Step Summary

I made so many of these stupid things, I know i will have to do it all again, but i cant meet the deadline with the other things i have to work on as well, I mean its 1 am and i am emotionally and mentally spent. So just know i did quite a few and so there quite a bit of disappointment here.

Lose of words... or am i because i am just pissed and ranting.... and i really cant express my emotions right now. .. i just quit. I just have to remember the product did work and it is thanks to the hand work. It wouldn't have worked without it. Its just fine even if I don't have it.

Design Process Step Summary

The initial Black and white is never all that hard for me, there are always minor adjustments that I make, which often times they are barely noticeable, like the border adjustments and slight treatments to the layout here and there. Its really the drawings that I do before this that make that difference. Which is why this transfers so easily. Which you can see in the drawing, the simplicity how it shows exactly where the computer work transfers to. It is almost exact which is where most of my successes come into play.

Design Process Step Summary

They are reduced size and I did do several at a larger size because some of the details that you can see aren’t clear enough to judge as far as what needed to be changed and worked on more, but for now this was a good idea of what it was looking like, and it would be easy to add the red to it.

Design Process Step Summary

Who knew there were so many right and wrong reds, a graphic artists named Clint is who.

Its always either a frustration or a fun part of the design process for me. the final touches or fishing points. I never feel that I am the best at selecting color, and some of this could be the printer, but it always feels like it’s a struggle. But this was simple. It was just one color but still. You can see where I really played with the different colors to get the perfect red… or the red that I felt was perfect for this at least.

I also continued to fine tune and adjust the design accordingly to the feedback that I was give or even what I had noticed as I continued to execute it.

Design Process Step Summary

I never know what to put on this one, we have to describe this stage in the process but I don’t really know what more you can say here. If you have see it once you have see it a million times.

I did notice that this composite still needs the bleed adjusted in the window but also the finger hole which was discussed but not quite finished. I will still have to do this. but for now this is the finished composite.

Design Process Step Summary

Oooo… so squeaky clean, or something like that. The composite at this stage is all about removing some of the noise of the profession and presenting the piece as a easy to read product layout / package. Which of course this meets those requirements.

And of course my Mock Mount, never really required, but fun to do. I think it just makes it look sharp with the Mounted finish even if its a sham digital mounting.

Design Process Step Summary

Here it is, the finished work. I feel this is the best piece of the course next to the grooming kit. There are still some slight adjustments that need to be made to the copy, typeface, and logo, but the overall design is what I intended and I am quite please with this work. I am proud of this project’s outcome. Even with the hiccup of being sick, I crammed, and completed all the work to get it done, and that is no small task. It is an achievement. Which for the fact that I got caught up… I have to say I wasn’t sure I would pull it off.
