PACKAGE DESIGN
PROJECT SUMMARY - Box (Pet Grooming)
ART 2240 Package Desgin - Kerry Gonzales

ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE AND SUMMARY
This assignment was to get students to think critically with the world of boxes and the end product in mind. The styles and uses of boxes are unlimited. There are shipping boxes. Display boxes. Corrugated cardboard boxes. Rigid Boxes. Folding boxes. And so many more! It truly is unlimited and for students it is to get them to start thinking and have the introduction boxes.
For this box assignment we completed a collapsible gable style box. This is also referred to a lunchbox style. It has a gable or "roof" and handle. Many of these are used for food products as a "take-away" box. But this style can also be used as a gift or product box. Many are seen in boutiques and around the holidays. The addition of a handle and roof complicates the design or should I say, "Offers another challenge!"
Some of these boxes are made of a kraft color or unbleached substrate (paper) while others are C1S or coated one side white. many ways to achieve the end goal and with different ways of execution.
What's the Product?
For this assignment the type of product will be a pet grooming kit. You decide the target audiences and which type of pet.
HAND COMP
I generally do not struggle with this portion of the assignment, but for the type of look and appearance I wanted to achieve for some of the different ideas and concepts there were various challenges that I encountered. But the most success in my work is always the pencil playground and working through an idea. This was huge for this project. The logo itself set up what I was wanting to achieve from the beginning and if the logo didn’t work the look couldn’t be achieved either.

I feel that overall, the assignment had success. And it all started from the hand work stages. There is really nothing that I would change for this portion of the assignment, maybe just that I should continue to save and show some of the process work that gets lost in the transition flow of it all. Particularly the doodles and sketch stage.
COMPUTER COMP
Always such fun, this took me a bit longer than usual. I have been working to become more familiar with illustrator, so I challenged my self to more mainly in the illustrator program. And I feel that challenging myself to do so really helped me become more familiar with the program and going forward it will allow me to achieve better product outcomes.

I think there were really only challenges that I found in trying to get some of the final colors to work in illustrator and of course some of the tools and settings. And then there was also an issue or two with some color challenges and photo manipulation issues with photoshop.

All in all, I feel that the end product was successful, with only minor changes visually on the pre print front and then some of the assembly that I had on my end as well. I had a challenge or two with the sizing of the box that was measured originally verse the box that I construct/pasted to. So, there were a few size factors that needed to be accounted for that I didn’t realize until the end.
BOX PROJECT
PROCESS AND FINAL OUTCOME

Design Process Step Summary
I really was leaning towards doing something with an elderly cat because of my own personal closeness with the rescue animals and cats that I have found and adopted, elderly cats need love and grooming more than people realize. This was a big portion to the research that I had.

Then the first job that I had was working in a stable doing cleaning of stalls and grooming the horses so I figured this would be a fun area to work.

The last was a dapper dog mustache grooming kit, its odd but I love watching not football after thanksgiving, but the dog show that usually is on. So, this was kind of a fun concept to pursue.

Design Process Step Summary
Ahhh... the doodle stage, I will always and still call them the crap sketches or pencil playground work because no matter how good I may become or what i do, they will in some ways still be just that. Even if there are those who do not care for the term. But more so than not, that is often what it is, there is layout and ideas at play but nothing is quite into fruition at this stage. My logo was looking pretty tight even though it was just a Sketch, it was the foundation of the direction it was going to take and I wanted to make sure it would have the look that I desired.

Design Process Step Summary
So many ideas here, and I loved them all, or at least a few parts of each. All of the ideas would work and come together well. I knew that I really wanted to go with the mustache doggy kit, but still leaned towards the cat care, and while the horse kit was fun…. The doggy stache and silver paws really won out here.

Design Process Step Summary
So Cute... these small representations of the real deal are essential in seeing what you want to take forward and getting an idea of what creative aspects your work can hold, these sometimes can be a bother, or they can be pure joy... either way they just turn out so damn cute. and you can see which one i really pushed and how it was unfolding.

Design Process Step Summary
Such a hard decision, I still liked my dapper doggy mustache kit, but I was totally second guessing myself. this would have been a strong project to take forward and I could see it here. I know I will end up working on it, in my own time. but you can totally see the ideas in competition with one another. Plus the silver paws had a personal connection to me and a humanitarian need.

Design Process Step Summary
its just fund to see what it looks like in this stage and what direction its heading into. I think moving forward it just stays a solid idea, i had a few tweaks as all projects do but this is the ground work to the process of success. It always baffles me when you hear about designers who don't know how to do this or feel it is an unnecessary step. I just cant image this to be the case.

Design Process Step Summary
What a challenge this was, not the work itself but the cheat it part I thought I would try out, I had my die layer out on the computer, So I thought why not have that printed out at full scale and add the artwork / work on top of it. Bad Idea.... I would normally have don't this all out myself. And i should have, Graphite and erasers did not play well with the paper that was large sized at all. I had multiple smudged areas that I had to clean up or couldn't and it was just a mess from what I would have normally achieved. It all worked out in the end and I am happy with it for the most part, there are just parts of it that I felt were in their way fails. Which they were fails that I could have avoided if I had done it myself.

Design Process Step Summary
Looking good, its a scan of my work to get it to this point, being full sized and what have you. I loved what it was doing and the direction it was heading into. I just was very pleased with the look despite some issues in this stage.

Design Process Step Summary
The initial Black and white is never all that hard for me, the minor adjustments that i may make you could barely see, it is almost exactly to the drawing at this point, the biggest issues were in creating all the photo assets the piece. all the photo manipulations, typeface manipulation, the logo build... and so on and so forth. But all in all this is a part that is straight forward to me.

I do have to say that the biggest drawback is my saving process, but from a suggestion of a fellow peer, I know that moving forward I can work less destructively and while the changes I make are small in this stage I’ll be able to at least show more of them.

Design Process Step Summary
I don't usually show the cute factor, but when I do... I'm sure to include my hand in the picture to show how small and awesome these can be.
Getting to be a pro at cutting this die out.

Design Process Step Summary
There were some colors changes in the strips, being that they felt too bright and the photo was too dark, there was still questions of if the photo needed to be toned down further, but at this point I didn't end up doing more, I loved how it all came together, I just feel proud of this one. It turned out exactly as I wanted…. With only a few needed improvements and tweaks. But as far as a finished project for this assignment and class, I am pleased.

Design Process Step Summary
Its always so real when it gets to this point, even before you assemble it, It just feels done and accomplished. I really am happy with the overall work, I can adjust a few things here and there, type, photo, logo, and some light color accents, but really it has met my expectations and I hope it shows. Nothing and no one is perfect, but sometimes as an artists it just feels good when you have a project that feels good and worth it.

This is one of those moments.

Design Process Step Summary

Clean presentation, I like doing this part, The presentation of the clean composite of course, but also the "mock mounts". These aren't required to the project. This look and presentation was traditionally something we would have done with previous works and projects. Which while it isn't required, I still feel that it gives it a presentation quality and look that is in some ways needed... but that could just be a personal opinion of course.

Design Process Step Summary
Here it is, the finished work.
I think I executed it well, Despite some size issues of the box that I used to form it to, verses the box I measured originally, And a pasting issues where the glue and fold shows, but other than that.... Total win.... Ish. Ill still be adjusting a few things. But i hope others have enjoyed its out come as much as I have.
