ART 2230 Advanced Type & Layout - Kerry Gonzales
ASSIGNMENT OUTLINE AND SUMMARY
Unlike some of the zines you may see that have open content, no style guides, and – gasp – use images from all over without permission! – in this class the zine has quite a few restrictions as far as size, layout, copy, images, etc.

The Zine project is the "big final" project in this class. Everything about it will be original to you; writing, illustration, photography, etc. The only exceptions would be an occasional attributed quote and/or family photos. Both of these will need to be approved before using. This piece is a test of your ability to apply the Principles & Elements of Design as well as everything learned in previous type and layout class.

Yes, it's a big deal.

Keep in mind that this class is a typography and layout class, not an illustration or photography class. You will need to use a lot of different type treatments. That doesn't mean using a lot of different typefaces! If you have a lot of type treatments, then you can have a lot of visuals, with permission of course. Layout and style guides are key.
HAND COMP

Oddly enough this part of this project was challenging for me, I tend to fall back on my roots for sketching on most projects, and tend to be heavily focused in the hand comp stages of my work, but for some reason I just didn’t sketch as much or feel the drive to with this one. It may be because from the beginning I kind of had an idea of what I wanted to do and where I wanted to take this project with a certain look and feel to it. This could also be why from each step of the design process to another there were only slight changes or adjustments that I made, don’t get me wrong some of them were definitely impacting changes and not always simple. But they still maintained a look that I had established early on.

I love hand comp stages, but for me this was a struggle. And I can only speculate as to why. I feel that the end result was successful and so it still worked out, but the observation of less sketch / hand work was interesting to me to say the least.

COMPUTER COMP
I know in this stage I had the most fun, which as I mentioned above that is not always the case with my work because I love hand comp stages.
So, I saved and then purchased a Wacom monitor and have been taking illustrator this semester, when I got to the computer stages of the work, I decided to push my self to use them and gain practice with experience.

The first test was editing and creating the photo for the cover that met my imagined vision (which I didn’t even end up using) Though I may go back and create a secondary version of this project with more edge and photo work, combined with some sharpie style illustrations.

After I did some comic illustrations matching one of my sketch stages work. and then after the overall layout and type work, I back tracked some of my illustrations and axed the photos on the front shifting towards illustrations with no photos. Lots of back and forth, but I knew what I wanted to do and how I wanted it to look, so in combination to time and expectations or ability, I concluded with this rather successful design.

I personally really like the end product. I might darken some of the colors or change them slightly as well, but for now I enjoy them. You never know what you may improve on in the further though.

ZINE PROJECT
PROCESS AND FINAL OUTCOME

1. Research & Brainstorming

Design Process Step Summary

I found so many images, which the ones I have chosen to upload here are random pieces from the research that I had done, because at one point it was thought I found myself getting further and further lost in the internet and my searches. This is but a very very small sampling of my research and images for this piece.

they are just that... mini dummies, to work out the fold / page layout / spread layout. Also the overall design of the project and its artwork. Not really a whole lot more to be said about this stage.

God this was fun, I didn’t really want to tell “my” story from a first-person straightforward writing point, I wanted to have it be creative. I’m not sure where the poetry part came in because I’m no poet or even feel like I’m any good at it. But when it started to flow, it just kept on going, and there was one point where I just felt I was on a roll and couldn’t stop, so what started as just one poem, instantly grew to 8 poems total. Which also affected my initial ideas on the design. But that’s okay because it stands out, its creative, and its fun. Yay design work.

4. Sketches and Doodles

Design Process Step Summary

Ohhh scketches and doodles, I never capture or save many of these. They are often creative playground pieces that I don’t keep track of, they help the imaginations creative flow, but are honestly quite disposable in the end.

This perhaps isn’t a great practice to have and it is one that I have struggled with throughout this semester for some reason more than others. This is one of my greatest takeaway improvements, “preserving the notation and salvation of work” even in the crap sketch stages.

Something I have found, in this work and previous one, I use a mechanical pencil with a very fine tip. In doing so I can get precise details, however when I photograph my work it doesn’t show up, in these I tried to go over the lighter work to darken it up but it ended up looking sloppier. Which this isn’t the case for these. I also didn’t want to ruin sketches that I personal like or feel would be nice portfolio pieces. Not the digital one in this case but a physical one that I have assembled.

My issue at this point was that my tight intermediate was practically my tight hand final, I spent some good time and love with this, so I knew that I had over done this some, in the next stage of the work I would only do eight of the pages to save some time and work but also because I knew that this was pretty much my tight hand come, I could adjust them to reflect the stages that are more appropriate however I also don’t want to do that because it isn’t the actual process that was done in order to complete the work. sometimes there are just aspects of our work, that despite our system and execution, they still fall out of order. Not always but once in a while this is a very really occurrence for an artist.

Design Process Step Summary

As an English minor, I can always appreciate the gravity and meaning of a good brainstorm, I do them more often than not. I at first for some time felt it was silly for design work, but overtime I have learned their essential part in how a design comes together thought its content.

Much like the stories we write as writer or other works of fact and fiction, a good brainstorm is the foundation to a successful story. This brainstorm I had some fun with, because I don’t believe in banning books and feel it’s a very fascist and small minded move for such a “free” nation.
Which is the beginning of my design, I really wanted to do more graphic appearance but felt that even my mouse was pushing it.
I would have loved to do a few books with chains and barbed wire. Or something to the effect of burning books. Or a finger held up saying “hush, they don’t exist:” all in type of course. So many ideas.

This honestly is what it says and initial comp, I really started to have fun at the computer stage, but this design was alright but also lacking in may ways. So, in the end, as well as the beginning… this was a good start to the project on the computer.

Design Process Step Summary

In previous works I have been able to pull up my art and notate changes on the Wacom but in this project, I found this to be almost impossible due to the number of spreads in the project and the scope of the project as a whole. I did lots of changes but there became so many different versions I have only provided a few here.

It just escalated and was difficult to capture changes, which Is why I assembled one at one point to try and mark up for changes, you see things that you hadn’t before when you print and assemble sometime.

Design Process Step Summary

I really liked it in black and white for some reason color was more difficult with the zine, I kind of thought the color ruined it some, which is probably why I still kept mine mostly black, white, and grey with some color here and there.

There were things that were definitely working at this point, but also some really learning curves and missing elements. However, it was a good foundation to work on for the color. it was also interesting that while this was the "final" design layout in black and white, This "final" design continued to change and wasn't so final at all.

13. Assembled Color Computer Full Size dummy

Design Process Step Summary

Ohhhh this was frustrating for me. I printed several and none of the printed colors were exactly what I wanted them to be. Every printer was different. So I reached a point where I had to choose one for cost effectiveness and run with it, I ended up choosing this one because it was closer to my computer design.

On top of this color management fiasco, I had built several of these things and then the one that was close to my actual color design I GLUED WRONG. I about died when I realized what I had done. But there was no going back.

That being said it shows a concept of the finished design however the graph was glued in the wrong spot and practically ruins this dummy. I’m just out of finances this go. *raise your hand if you have moments of starving artist syndrome*

Design Process Step Summary

I can’t tell you how many composites I have done to this point or spreads, but there has always been back and forth confusion for me on the color of the die lines. I feel I have it, but there is always a need for me to partition things neatly and color-code differently, so for instance a fold and a trim I always forget that they need to be the same color, so for me at this stage it is always a back and forth recheck and correct little details like that.

So, this isn’t a hard stage of the process as much as it is a “Clint don’t forget” stage. Few moments and I have it though. It just takes a moment to make things work the way you need. And that is where a moment can be a costly or life saving thing.

Design Process Step Summary

It was a long project to be sure, there were lots of times where I ran into issues and lots of moments where I hated this. But like most of our art projects moment of negative emotion and frustrations pass, as things came together thought out the semester and worked out the way they have… in the end I am relieved and quite satisfied.
