My Advanced Design 2020 was interesting to say the least, when we all first started this course it was smooth and “business as usual” … that is to say more normal. Towards the end however, the 2020 Covid-19 Quarantine hit and it changed a lot for my school semester.

This course and several others were not really designed to be online, and I had always preferred person to person interaction. With the change from in class to online for all of my courses, I was trying to figure out how to make school work and figure out how to adapt accordingly for success. While it was an interesting challenge, many students like my self rose to the occasion and still maintained our efforts and dedication to completing our work.

I feel that while there were some unforeseen challenges that we would prefer to have not had happen to our education and semester. This type of unknown is what we would find in the real world / real business setting, and our ability to still complete work and come out on top with success in this situation, demonstrates our ability to succeed when these moments arise.

I know that this would have been different had this not happened. I know that there would have been some students stick with it when they did not. I know that it would have had a different outcome for some… however for me I feel that I have done my best and had much success. I know that I have learned a lot. And I know that I have demonstrated my ability and dedication as an artist to rise to the occasion even when the going get rough.

As always, the courses provided by the instructor Kerry Gonzales, are a wealth of knowledge and are vital to our growth and educational advance as Artists. I enjoyed this course immensely, and her abilities as a educator hold great reward to those who are willing to learn, and as an individual she is always a delight. My success is attributed to her success.

COURSE CONTEXT FROM SYLLABUS

INTRODUCTION

This course introduces students to the importance of corporate design in business today. Students will use research and analysis to develop a logo which will then be applied to an identity program. Paper, printing, color, production and graphic standards applications will be studied. Students will experience presentation situations.

Initial sketches, thumbnails, intermediate, and final preliminary work, must be executed in the traditional manner – by hand. Computer and/or handwork will be used to complete projects as directed by the instructor. In class projects and samples may be assigned.

Only original artwork (illustrations or graphics) may be used in this class. No clip art. It is mandatory that photos used are original, or have been acquired from public domain sites – copyright free outlets – NOT stock photo sites. Usage rights must be established for any purpose and documentation must accompany all projects on the due date or the project will not be accepted.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to apply:

• The visual elements of art, the principles of design, and the typography & layout fundamentals needed to solve more complex problems in design work.

• The importance of corporate design and collateral in business today.

• TRADITIONAL HAND mechanical skills and techniques of indicating headlines, subheads, body text, line art, and photos as a means to complete thumbnail, intermediate, and final conceptualization studies in the design process.

• TRADITIONAL HAND mechanical skills needed for presentations.

• COMPUTER skills needed to complete projects in the design industry.

• COMMUNICATIONS skills and knowledge of design practices needed for effective business interaction.

BRANDING PROJECT

Until the changes to the course due to Covid-19 Quarantine we were to mount these, unfortunately that was removed for the course requirements at this time. However i have created Mock Mount images to show what this would have looked like, and while this is not required at this time. I will be completing this at a later date as I have the supplies to do so. I only lack a larger print printer. So stay tuned...
