For me I really enjoyed the course and would recommend type and layout as well as to have Kerry be their professor in this course. The tools and experience not one set a professional pace for educational out comes but also gives students the tools to achieve success while still attending school.

I would have to be honest in that while it was at first intimidating for me to have such a structured educator from day one, and uncertain if I had made the right choice. I did find that after some time of getting into the swing of things, I enjoyed the structure and benefited from having the canvas page as a resource.

My only drawback was perhaps that there were often times more announcements than what was needed to complete the course, and the calendar was heavily / overly utilized. For a student like my self who is looking at the to do list for pacing success and completion dates, it often times would be filled with other dates which in turn affected my viewing of other course completion dates and even ones with in the course.

Despite this, I would not let this discourage anyone, the content of the course was very rewarding and the educator was understanding, as well as necessarily critical of the work that was completed from day one. She was always clear with the expectation of the course and the desired out comes, pushing us to push our selves further towards success.

COURSE CONTEXT FROM SYLLABUS

INTRODUCTION

This class introduces students to typography; the art of using and understanding letters, as part of the process of graphic design. Students will explore the characteristics and design potential of typography through rendering forms, studying the history/background of letters and their evolution to usage in printed materials today, recognizing specific typefaces, and learning the principles of typographic use. Mechanical skills and techniques of indicating headlines, subheads, body text, line art, and photos will be introduced. The layout portion of this course will teach students how to recognize and solve common layout problems using page and text organizers, visuals, grids, etc. Hand and computer skills will be used IN DEPTH.

Initial sketches, thumbnails, intermediate, and final preliminary work, must be executed in the traditional manner – by hand. Computer and/or hand work will be used to complete projects as directed by the instructor per project. All illustration must be the original work of the student. Photos used may be considered “stock” for projects. However, original photography work of the student is encouraged.
